The Recreational Therapy profession is committed to ethical conduct and high-quality service delivery. As recreational therapy professionals in Arizona, we are guided by the comprehensive documents published by the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA): the Code of Ethics and the Standards of Practice. These foundational documents ensure recreational therapists consistently uphold the values of our profession, prioritize the well-being of those we serve, and deliver evidence-based, effective interventions. They provide a framework for accountability, integrity, and excellence in all aspects of recreational therapy practice.

The ATRA Code of Ethics

The ATRA Code of Ethics outlines the fundamental principles that govern our professional behavior and decision-making. It guides us in treating individuals with respect, honesty, and a commitment to their best interests.

Selected Excerpt:

"PRINCIPLE 1: BENEFICENCE. Recreational Therapy personnel shall treat persons served in an ethical manner by actively making efforts to provide for their well-being by maximizing possible benefits and relieving, lessening, or minimizing possible harm."

Contextual Note: This core principle emphasizes that the primary responsibility of a recreational therapist is to do good and ensure the welfare of the individuals they serve. It underscores our commitment to maximizing positive outcomes and minimizing any potential risks in our interventions.

The ATRA Standards of Practice

The ATRA Standards of Practice outline minimum expectations for competent, ethical practice. They provide a framework for systematic service provision, from assessment and planning to implementation and evaluation, ensuring consistency across diverse settings.

Selected Excerpt:

"Standard 1: Assessment. The recreational therapist receives and responds… to requests… for assessment and treatment; and conducts an individualized assessment to collect systematic, comprehensive and accurate data."

Contextual Note:
This standard highlights the critical first step in providing effective recreational therapy: a thorough and individualized assessment. It ensures that interventions are tailored to each person's unique needs, strengths, and goals, forming the foundation for meaningful and impactful therapy.
